Development of Forming and Assembly Technology for a 17,700 lbs Class Engine Nozzle Fairing for Supersonic Aircraft

- Secured integrated process technologies for forming, post-processing, and assembly of an engine nozzle fairing for supersonic aircraft.
- Established a foundation for domestic production (localization) of complex contoured structures through high temperature titanium superplastic forming, precision machining, and assembly.
- Established an integrated process covering design, manufacturing, and verification to ensure stable forming quality.
Achievements & Results
- Successfully produced a nozzle fairing prototype and completed structural verification.
- Internalized core forming and assembly technologies and laid the groundwork for application to a domestic supersonic aircraft program.
- Completed patent registration for a superplastic forming Apparatus.

Development of Manufacturing Technology for Aerospace Ti-6Al-4V Sheet and Large Scale Hot Formed Parts

Summary of Development
- Established 3,000 mm class large scale hot forming equipment.
- Built an integrated production system enabling high temperature forming, machining, and verification.
- Optimized forming conditions and secured dimensional accuracy to support import substitution and localization.
Achievements & Results
- Achieved Korea’s first hot forming of aerospace grade Ti-6Al-4V and obtained Boeing process approval (D1-4426).
- Localized 2,400 mm class large titanium formed components for aerospace applications and completed application verification.
- Completed patent registration for a die heating device for hot forming and hot forming equipment including the same.

Development of Flex-forming Process Technology to Reduce Wrinkling and Improve Productivity in B737 Chord Component Manufacturing

Summary of Development
- Secured wrinkle reduction technology through optimization of the flex-forming process.
- Developed a form block and tray exchange mechanism enabling simultaneous shearing and trimming.
- Established a new process suitable for a high mix, low volume production environment.
Achievements & Results
- Successfully developed wrinkle reduction and combined shearing/trimming form blocks, and verified improvements in formed part quality and productivity.
- Demonstrated potential for applying the technology beyond aerospace components to other industries such as automotive and leisure.
- Completed patent registration for a sheet forming apparatus using a flexforming process and including a tray exchange device.

- Developed superplastic forming and hot forming processes for complex shaped engine pylon skin components.
- Built a forming dataset and design database for CP-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V sheet materials.

- Successfully produced prototypes of pylon skins using superplastic forming and hot forming.
- Verified feasibility for localization (domestic production) by securing dimensional accuracy and forming quality for complex titanium components.
